Key Strategies for Leaving fund assets to Heirs

Key Strategies for Leaving fund assets to Heirs

Estate planning is a vitally important part of our financial lives — regardless of your age or financial circumstances. That’s because an estate plan not only helps ensure that your assets are distributed as you intend upon your death, it also can reduce the emotional and financial burden on your loved ones as they manage your end-of-life care and settle your estate.

Two Ways to Leave a Legacy

There are two simple strategies for investors who wish to transfer their investments in a Dreyfus fund to their heirs. Each allows you to pass assets directly to your heirs while potentially avoiding lengthy probate courtproceedings — meaning your beneficiaries won’t have to wait to access their inheritance.

• Make sure your beneficiary designations on all your retirement accounts (including your IRAs, 401(k) and other employer-sponsored retirement programs) are up to date. Be sure to check names, addresses and contact information.

• For non-retirement accounts, you can name a Transfer on Death (TOD) beneficiary. TOD registration is available for Individual and Joint Accounts (Joint Tenant With Rights of Survivorship or Tenants by Entirety) with a domestic address.

Please contact a Dreyfus Representative for a TOD Form or an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) Beneficiary Designation Form to update your account(s).
