  • In September, financial markets remained severely challenged by a confluence of negative macroeconomic news, with negative returns across equities, sovereign bonds, corporate credit, and commodities. The only positive story for investors remained dollar cash.
  • First, hotter-than-expected inflation prints and concerns that sticky inflation may lead to a de-anchoring of inflation expectations contributed to renewed central bank hawkishness.
  • Second, the outlook for growth remained challenging, with evidence that activity in key regions of the global economy (namely the euro area, the UK, China) is slowing fast, and by more than expected.
  • Finally, signs of financial market stress began to surface.
